Panic Cleaning? How to Get Your Home Guest-Ready in Just 24 Hours

Everyone wants a guest ready cleaning routine that doesn’t take all week. Here is how to do it…

The tree is up, the presents are wrapped, and the menu is planned. But then you look around and realize: the house is a mess, and the guests are arriving tomorrow.

Don’t panic.

We know the feeling. The “festive season” often feels more like the “stressful season.” But here is a secret from professional cleaners: You don’t need to clean the whole house. You only need to clean the parts your guests will actually see.

If you are short on time, forget the attic and the inside of your cupboards. Follow this “Guest-Ready in One Day” guide to fake a perfect home in record time.

1. The “First Impression” (30 Minutes)

Your guests form an opinion of your home within 10 seconds of walking through the door.

  • The Shoes: Clear the pile of shoes and coats from the hallway. If you don’t have space, throw them in a laundry basket and hide it in your bedroom (we won’t tell).
  • The Smell: This is crucial. A clean home smells fresh. Open the windows for 10 minutes to let the stale air out, then light a citrus or pine candle.
  • The Doormat: Shake it out. A clean entrance sets the tone.

2. The “Judgment Zone”: The Bathroom (45 Minutes)

Let’s be honest: this is where guests will judge the most. If you only deep clean one room, make it the guest bathroom.

  • The Three T’s: Focus on the Toilet, Taps, and Towels.
  • Shine the Chrome: Use a microfiber cloth to polish the taps and mirrors. If the chrome shines, the whole room feels cleaner.
  • Fresh Towels: Put out your “best” towels—the ones you don’t let the kids use!

3. The Living Room “De-Clutter” (1 Hour)

Don’t try to organize everything perfectly. Right now, your goal is floor space.

  • The Basket Method: Grab a laundry basket and walk around the room. Anything that doesn’t belong there goes in the basket. Hide the basket. Deal with it in January.
  • Vacuum in Lines: Vacuum your carpets in straight lines. It leaves those professional-looking “shark tooth” marks that make it look like you spent hours cleaning.
  • Stain Emergency? If you spot a stain on the carpet, don’t scrub it with dish soap (you might set it in permanently). Cover it with a rug or an ottoman for now, and call a professional stain remover after the holidays.

4. The Kitchen Cheat (1 Hour)

The kitchen is for cooking, so it doesn’t need to be sterile—it just needs to look hygienic.

  • Clear the Counters: Put appliances away. Clear counters make a small kitchen look huge.
  • The Oven Hack: Don’t spend 3 hours scrubbing the inside of the oven right now. Just clean the glass door inside and out. If guests can see through the glass, they assume the rest is clean. (Save the deep scrub for a professional oven clean later).
  • The Sink: Scrub the sink and polish the tap. A sparkling sink is the centrepieces of a clean kitchen.

5. The Final Flourish

  • Plump the sofa cushions.
  • Dim the lights (it hides dust!).
  • Put on some music.
